We’re just going to say it: most New Year’s resolutions are the worst. Whether you’re vowing to get back into your high school prom clothes or keep your closet color coded for the rest of your life, most people don’t have a chance to sticking to their resolutions past Valentine’s Day.
In our experience, though, New Year’s resolutions for your business tend to be a little more achievable because 1) they don’t require you to avoid cookies for the rest of your life and 2) you have a financial incentive to keep up the good work. With all that said, we’ve put together a list of marketing New Year’s resolutions that you should consider making for your business in 2016. We promise you won’t regret it.
Get in shape
We’re not talking about shrinking your adorable love handles. We’re talking about shaping up and streamlining your marketing plan. Look at what you spent on marketing in 2015 and figure out what was successful, what could use improvement, and what you want to change this year. With that information, you can decide what your marketing resources are for 2016 and include it in your budget.
Get Organized
Make a plan and stick to it. Once you’ve settled on a marketing budget, you can figure out what you need to spend where. Write down your busiest times of year and how you’re going to promote yourself. It could be a discount for new customers, a monthly newsletter to your existing contacts, or a big neighborhood open house, but whatever you decide, you’ll be happy you planned out the year in advance when things start getting hectic.
Stand up for what you believe in
Take a stand for your brand. That means finding your voice. Even a simple brainstorming exercise thinking of three or four statements that define who you are is a great start. Things like: We go above and beyond to make sure our customers are satisfied or We might be more expensive than the competition, but we want our customers to know that they’re getting more for their money when they hire us, will give you core statements to refer to when you’re unsure what your messaging should be. These statements don’t have to be fancy, but they do have to say something about who you are as a company. They are the basis of your brand and they will help you stay consistent with your voice.
