In school, teachers would put you on a team for group projects, and most of the time, you didn’t get to pick your teammates. Back then, having a friend on your team was a priority, but it doesn’t work like that in real life, and therein lies the lesson: Diversity is a mandatory part of an effective team. In the world of business, it’s no different. If your business is coming up with a plan for execution, who do you invite? Surely not just yourself (CEO), because the more the merrier! A brainstorming session with the CEO, marketing team, sales people, and public relations team has a lot more to offer than solely one branch of your business – so utilize your people!

3 Ways to Build Diversity:

  • Hiring – As for any team-related challenge, the process begins in the hiring phase. Hiring a diversity of employees will open windows of opportunity that you didn’t know were possible. On the other hand, hiring a bunch of the same kind of people will keep that window closed. For example, sometimes you need structured, organized and disciplined thinkers, sometimes you need more creative thinkers to pitch in. The more diverse your team is, the more perceptions you’ll have access to. People across the world experience socialization and problem-solving in different ways – use that to your advantage!
  • Gathering – In sports, you’ll often find divides in the team. For example, football has an offense, a defense, and special teams, and they may practice separately with different coaches, but they are all still part of the team. It’s important to have your disjointed departments come together for the overall game plan when it’s being developed, so that each can make their contribution towards success.
  • Empowering – When a team with diversity comes together, there’s no limit to what they can achieve. With broadened ranges and more adaptable conflict resolutions, teammates have the capacity to lift each other up. Not only is this good for brainstorming, planning, and executing, but it does wonders for team morale around the office, as well. Building off each other’s ideas and learning from different thought processes holds an unprecedented level of efficiency, and everyone improves their personal competence along the way. Not to mention the friendships and bonds formed – an extra benefit for making work life a little less stressful, and a little more fun.
