Over the past year, Ted Lasso has burst onto the scene as one of the most popular and gripping ongoing television shows. The writers have managed to create a show that is both funny and genuinely relatable, even if you aren’t a head coach or household name athlete. There are many lessons and themes throughout the show that we could all benefit from as leaders, and we’ve decided to recap a few of our favorites!

Leadership Lessons from Ted Lasso

Be a Goldfish

“You know what the happiest animal in the world is? It’s a goldfish. It’s got a 10 second memory.

We all make mistakes from time to time, even with tasks we’ve successfully completed hundreds of times. Even still, we don’t stand to gain much by being harsh self-critics after the fact. Instead, be a goldfish and approach each new situation with a blank slate and refreshed state of mind.

No Individual is Bigger Than the Team

“I think that you might be so sure that you’re one in a million, that sometimes you forget that out there you’re just one in 11.”

Teamwork is one of the keys to success, and Ted Lasso demonstrates this belief time and time again. Ted himself knew quite little about the game of soccer when he initially landed a gig as a head coach. He did know that he is a great leader, however, and made an effort to surround himself with a team with expertise where he falls short.

Listen to Everyone and Take Interest

“We can’t really be good partners unless we get to know each other, right?”

Ted’s commitment to taking genuine interest in each of his colleagues is another theme present throughout the series. He genuinely cares about each member of the team, and it boosts morale across the locker room. When you try to get to know your team, you can empathize with their situation, gain perspective, and begin to understand their motivations.

Mentorship

“For me, success is not about the wins and losses. It’s about helping these young fellas be the best versions of themselves on and off the field.”

Individuals in leadership positions should always attempt to leave their teammates better than they found them. In the workplace, it’s easy to get wrapped up in developing technical/ work related skills, but an increased focus on team skills and professional skills can ensure you are leaving a lasting impact on the people who look up to you.
