What do all of these commands have in common? They are all calls to action. Calls to action are also known as CTAs, and they can be found across the web on websites, blogs, and newsletters. What are they, and should you keep using the same one every time you hit send or publish?

What Are Calls to Action?

A call to action (CTA) is a piece of copy that is carefully crafted to get the end user to take a specific action. Depending on what type of media you are creating, the calls to action that you include could look like anything from asking them to click a link to requesting that they leave a comment. Some of the most common types of CTAs include:

  • Text links
  • Text without a link
  • Buttons

Calls to action can be very short (“Buy Now!”) or much longer (“Click the link below to schedule your free consultation today”). The right type of CTA for you will depend on a variety of factors.

What Makes a Good Call to Action?

Newsletters, blogs, and social media all require you to engage directly with followers and users. For the best results, you also want them to engage with you through making purchases, scheduling appointments, or clicking on their posts. A call to action is one of the ways that you can encourage people to engage with you. What are some of the things that make a call to action effective?

  • Use action words that are commanding, like buy, shop, try, sign up, donate, volunteer, subscribe, join, download, learn more, etc.
  • Create a sense of urgency that makes the user want to engage now
  • It is clear and easy to understand
  • It only contains a single offer so that there is no confusion over what is being asked

When Should You Use Calls to Action?

Every type of marketing content that you publish should have one or more calls to action inside of it. This includes obvious things, like paid ads on social media platforms, and others that are not as obvious, like landing pages and routine emails. Any time you hope that the reader takes a specific action, you can use a CTA or CTA button.

Additionally, you should use a CTA any time it is convenient for your customer to have one. For example, if you are an ecommerce website, you should have a one-click CTA button that allows customers to add an item to their cart. This does not just tell the customer to do something, it also makes it much easier for the customer to do what they want to do.

Should You Use a Call to Action Multiple Times?

The number of calls to action that is appropriate for your copy will depend on your goal, the length of the copy, and your target audience. On a landing page where you want a buyer to make a purchase, it muddies the water to also ask them to sign up for your newsletter and follow you on Facebook. However, on a more general page like your homepage, there is nothing wrong with having more than one CTA.
